Nanotechnology Originating from Nuclear Industry .A.Bochvar High-technology Research Institute of Inorganic Materials (VNIINM) is one of the leading research centers and the parent organization of the state corporation Rosatom working with material science and nuclear fuel cycle technologies. In the framework of Rosatom, VNIINM is part of the fuel company TVEL. In 2015, the Institute will celebrate its 70th anniversary, so it has the same age as the nuclear industry. The staff of the Research Institute 9, as VNIINM had been called until the early 1970s, participated in the creation of the nuclear shield of the country, nuclear fleet, nuclear energy, and space technology. Today, the nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, icebreakers, submarines, and research reactors is manufactured at the enterprises of TVEL using the technologies developed by VNIINM. Twenty-seven employees of the Institute became laureates of the Lenin Prize, 160 were awarded the State Prize, 530 were awarded orders and medals. The role and merits of VNIINM in the development of science and technology were recognized when it acquired the status of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation.
Besides the development of nuclear fuel, materials for nuclear reactors and technologies for processing radioactive waste, the Institute is engaged in researching a wide range of material science issues. In 2006, VNIINM established the Rosatom Center for Nanotechnology and Nanomaterials. VNIINM’s General Director, V.B.Ivanov, told us about high-tech innovations of the Institute used in various sectors of the economy.
The Russian Composite Market and the NCC’s Projects In the issue 8(54)'2014 we began to tell about the Nanotechnology Centre of Composites (NCC) established by the Composite Holding Company and the Rusnano Fund for Infrastructure and Educational Programs to develop engineering and production of modern composite materials as well as implement investment programmes. With reference to this publication we would like to commend to the attention of our readers an interview with the Director of NCC Mikhail Stolyarov to discuss the problems of the Russian composite industry and the Centre’s projects.
Non-destructive methods of investigation of physical and mechanical and other properties of the materials used in dentistry The study of the basic properties of materials used in the dental practice showed the feasibility of analysis of these characteristics by non-destructive methods such as nanoindentation and light microscopy.
Nanodevice fabrication technologies with advanced high resolution electron beam lithography systems Crestec Corporation developed a high resolution electron beam lithography system CABL-UH. The machine concept, specification and writing performance of the system and potential applications are discussed in this article.
Ten best innovative products of the VacuumTechExpo 2015 From 14 to 16 April in Moscow at Sokolniki exhibition and convention centre the X International exhibition of vacuum machines, equipment and technologies VacuumTechExpo 2015 took place. Business program of the exhibition included a poster presentations of equipment from leading world and domestic manufacturers and international scientific and technical conference "Vacuum equipment, materials and technology". Once again held a competition "The best innovative product in the field of high technologies".
Standardization in nanoindustry The standards that establish a common terminology in the field of nanotechnology will take effect in Russia for voluntary use from 1 January 2016. In connection with the message of Rosstandart, we decided to find out the opinion of experts on the standardization and terminology in the Russian nanoindustry.
Ion beam trimming in manufacturing of acoustic wave devices In case of acoustic wave filters, surface acoustic wave (SAW) and bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators, the quality depends a lot on the dimensions of several layers, hence an adjustment regarding homogeneity in sub-nm range has to be guaranteed. Within the article a technology of space-resolved correction of device wafer is described. The correction takes place due to a focused broad ion beam and a movement of wafer in front of it.
Gas-tight PVD coatings The demand for protective and strengthening surface coatings for parts and tools is constantly growing. Corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant, and also wear-resistant and antifrictional coatings are most demanded. Important area of application of special coatings is the production of parts for gas turbine engines. Analysis of coating methods for components that operate in harsh environments allowed to develop a new technology of nanostructured gas-tight PVD coating.
MMIC amplifiers with built-in antennas based on nano-heterostructures Institute of Ultra High Frequency Semiconductor Electronics of RAS (IUHFSE RAS) designed microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMIC) with the built-in antennas for receiving and transmitting paths with power amplifiers and low-noise amplifiers respectively. The MMIC of amplifiers with built-in antennas are manufactured on heterostructures AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs for the frequency bands 5 GHz and 10-12 GHz and on AlGaN/GaN for the range 58-65 GHz. Antenna directional patterns were measured.
